Dems Reign Supreme, Take Senate and House in Stunning Turn

Democrats crushed it in winning back Congress, setting the stage for a whole new ballgame in Washington for SNFs.

In midterm results the scale of which not many expected to happen, the Democrats won control of the House and Senate starting in January in such a sweeping fashion that the political map of the United States may have to be reconfigured for elections to come.

A sample of what happened is that a Democrat, Adam Hamilton, won a Senate seat in Kansas. The first time a Democrat has done this in 94 years. James Talarico won in Texas, the first time since 1988 that a Democrat was voted to go to the Senate from the Lonestar State. Democrats flipped a Senate seat in reliably red South Carolina, and won governorships in Texas and Georgia, and sent House rep after House rep from “safe” Republican districts packing, as further examples of the extent of the “blue tsunami.”

Around midnight on Nov. 4, The New York Times had at least 54 Senate seats going to Democrats, and upwards of 255 House seats.

“Senate Democrats have just delivered the greatest midterm performance in modern political history when just a year and a half ago, no one thought it was possible,” said Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), the soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader and the chair of the Senatorial Campaign Committee, respectively.

What Does This Mean for You?

One person on the record for expecting the midterm onslaught for Democrats was Mark Parkinson, CEO of Park Place, who cut a video weeks ago calling for a “blue tsunami,” reading the political tailwinds and forecasting markets correctly.

So, after the actual votes came in, what does he expect now for SNFs from Washington?

“This election will have major ramifications for the skilled nursing sector,” he said. “The Democratic majority will likely push a nursing home reform package, which will probably not become law but instead act as a template for what could happen after the next presidential election.”

President Trump, of course, is not going anywhere and has veto power over any legislation approved in the now-blue Congress.

Stay tuned this week for a special post-midterms video featuring Mark and JJ Rabinowich, as they decipher what the historic results mean for the sector, and beyond.
